Free fonts and dingbats from www.urbanfonts.com

www.urbanfonts.com gives you a massive choice of free fonts and free dingbats, everything from Greek to 3D to Western — over 8000. They list their favorite fonts, the new arrivals, and the top 100. Everything is categorized and you may choose among those categories or you can search for a specific topic (such as “cat,” for example). I particularly like the Space dingbats — that’s right, Martians, robots, spaceships . . .

You may install the fonts on your Windows or Mac PC (they provide detailed instructions in their FAQ), and you can use the fonts for your websites. You can even submit a free font — just email it to them.

The www.urbanfonts.com FAQ is a lesson unto itself. For example, to install fonts on a Windows PC, the FAQ tells you to 1) Unzip the file that you downloaded; 2)Go to Start > Control Panel; 3) Double-click the Fonts folder; 4) Browse in your hard drive for the fonts you wish to install; 5) Select the fonts (.ttf files) that you want to install and drag them into your fonts folder.

www.urbanfonts.com has an interesting blog detailing the uses and/or histories of Futura, Arial, Helvetica, Sans Serif, and more. They have a small support forum for your questions; it looks fairly new. And if free is not enough, they have a separate section for commercial fonts — the ones you must pay for.
